Jess takes the argument personal. With every resource and all the awareness in the world, she still has to gear up to present alternatives to her kids the way she’d prep a keynote: last night that meant finding an unwatched episode of Pixar’s Win or Lose and lining up six similar shows so nothing autoplayed after Mark Rober. Even the kids’ sections of these apps are junk. It is simply too much to put all of this on parents. Brit adds that half of American kids don’t have a parent home after school because the parents are working multiple jobs; the iPad is the babysitter. Dave puts a number on the imbalance: something like ten million computers in Meta’s and Google’s clouds against one human brain, and AI is making the compute side stronger. Brit wants protection for her boomer parents too; Jess wants it for herself.
Sam grants the liberty-versus-harm debate is interesting (John Stuart Mill gets invoked) but says the settlement resolves none of it. It’s theater: the lawyers make money, every AG gets to claim a win, nobody actually helps a kid. He credits Meta for giving regulators their win while opening the door to a real conversation, and argues the whole exercise is fighting last generation’s war. Dave agrees nothing changed and warns AI is going to make the problem so much worse.
